This course, Essential Electronics: Voltage Drop Testing, is the first in a series of Essential Electronics courses. Although the subject matter may at first appear to be quite elementary, the concepts laid out here form the foundation of sound electrical diagnosis. This course begins with electrical theory and Ohm’s law and continues with voltage drop testing of direct current circuits.
- Unplugged a failed component and plugged it back in to find it now works?
- Replaced a component that tested bad, but the vehicle was still not fixed?
- Replaced a fuel pump on a vehicle with low fuel pressure, only to find low pressure with the NEW pump?
- Tried to diagnose a window motor, power seat motor or blower motor that ran to slow?
If so, then have experienced the phenomenon know as a Voltage drop. What exactly is a voltage drop? Well, before we can answer that, we need to cover some electrical fundamentals which will help to understand not only what a voltage drop is, but how, why and when to perform a voltage drop test. The voltage drop test is the most important and the most misunderstood used in electrical diagnostics. With that in mind, let’s take a step back to the beginning – electricity.

Engine design and technology has rapidly advanced over the last few decades. Highly advanced engine software allows a great deal of adaptive learning that can mask emission and drivability problems caused by mechanical engine issues. These concerns may lie undetected until an adaptive threshold limit is broken and a malfunction indicator lam (M I L) results. Luckily for technicians, technology has also for new testing tools and techniques that help uncover these hidden mechanical concerns and allow us to more accurately diagnose engine related problems.
